On November 20, 2019, the Outern team competed in the Best of Student Startups Finale held by The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. The Finale featured the top 5 of 55 companies who entered the competition. The audience, composed of students, entrepreneurs, and Ohio State faculty members, resonated well with Outern’s presentation, awarding Outern the “People’s Choice Winner.” The Outern team was awarded $500 to continue to carry out its mission.
Outern is a web platform that has pioneered Outernships, which are short-term projects completed by college students remotely, allowing hiring managers to evaluate candidates based upon work done within their company, gradually train candidates, and stay relevant among the potential companies that a candidate might choose to work at. Outernships allow students to build real world experience and gain a feel for working within specific companies while providing the flexibility that students need to do work during the academic year. They are a flexible and non-committal way for companies and students to “test-drive” a potential relationship and make more informed career decisions.
